When our family had a shocking stillbirth, we were rocked and had no clue how to recover. We tried everything and nothing was helping. We knew we had to find something to help us all heal, or we wouldn’t make it through.
Until one day we drove a few hours and tried to surf, and it completely changed our lives.
In the beginning we didn’t have to already be in the water for it to start working. On the drive we cried, we screamed, we talked and prayed. It brought us together, and healing began in small doses. Some days the only time we felt normal was in the water.
Until we found surfing we were crumbling. We wanted healing so badly and we couldn’t find it. We would have never thought surfing would be it. We were horse people in the country. My husband and I had randomly surfed as teens and thought of trying it. Guess what: surfing has been the only thing that brought us together.
It gave us motivation, unity, and got us back to life — or whatever life is after a baby dies.
But our kids. They smile. They laugh. They are motivated. They talk about their baby brother with joy instead of only sadness.
We connect as a family. And as a mom — I couldn’t see past the grief before. But in the water, I can’t explain it. It’s different. I can cry and no one sees. I can breathe and not feel guilt. I just watch them surf and everything is okay for a minute. A minute I need.
And besides all of that, total strangers have cheered on the beach for me and my kids catching waves. You have no idea what that does for a hurting soul. The surf community is a beautiful place.
